Get Rich Or Die Gaming Sequel Rock Bottom Hits XBLIG

Baller Industries left an unexpectedly strong impression on the Xbox Live Indie Games marketplace with the release of the comedic adventure game Get Rich or Die Gaming in 2010. Bolstered by its risque box art and unusual premise (quick recap: kicked out of his house for playing too much DotA, protagonist Wilson Cooper sells drugs to support his habit), the game quickly became a top seller. Baller Industries followed up on its debut with the release of the brawler spin-off Let’s Get Fiscal earlier this year. This week at last brings the release of a direct sequel, Rock Bottom . which chronicles Cooper’s escape from prison and his awkward attempts to reintegrate with society. Rock Bottom’s gameplay has been streamlined in a traditional point-and-click interface, and the art has seen a marked improvement over Get Rich or Die Gaming. The characters even animate when they talk! Well, some of them do, anyway. There’s also much more voiced dialogue, and the game features a dozen or so speaking roles across its hour-long quest. I was a fan of Get Rich or Die Gaming — the humor isn’t for everyone, but the story was so ridiculous that it ended up winning me over in the end. Rock Bottom is a worthy follow-up, even if it does falter slightly in its latter half with uneven dialogue and the unfortunate addition of a crafting component. I enjoyed it quite a bit otherwise! Rock Bottom is priced at 80 Microsoft points ($1). A third chapter in the series will be released in May.

Browser Game Pick – The Several Journeys of Reemus : Beastly Blackhole of Bureaucracy (Jay Ziebarth)

Browser Game Pick – The Several Journeys of Reemus : Beastly Blackhole of Bureaucracy (Jay Ziebarth)

Unassuming hero? Check. Wise-cracking sidekick? Check. Epic quest? Check. Bureaucratic nightmare inhibiting the completion of your quest? Check and doublecheck. Beastly Blackhole of Bureaucracy is a cheeky, facepalm-inducing point & click adventure that will have you taking on Reemus and Liam’s most formidable foe: The Danricus Department of Heroes. You see, in order to vanquish an unrelenting wave of Death Slugs, these two must first acquire permission from the department. To do so, they can either wait for all eternity or produce three heroic references and a ‘danger’ sample before submitting their quest application online. Yes, it’s as silly as it sounds but that’s not a bad thing now, is it? Those interested in checking out the game should try this link here.

Demo: SARCIA (Michael Lavoie)

Demo: SARCIA (Michael Lavoie)

When we first covered SARCIA sometime back, many expressed concerns about things like the usage of music from a certain notable animated film and the lack of gameplay footage. Well, guess what? You can now find out if your worries had been justified. In conjunction with the recent Yuletide holidays, SARCIA’s developers recently released a free demo of their game. Sadly, it only consists of the introduction and the tutorial level but why look a gift horse in the mouth? Thanks to travel woes, I haven’t been able to check out the demo myself but it appears as though fans of LucasArt’s Loom and ThatGameCompany’s Journey might find something quite enticing here. According to the development log, ‘everything in Sarcia will be about learning new words to sing and to combine in order to progress’. And as you might have guessed already, none of those words will be anything we’re familiar with – they’re all derived from a language one of the developers spent two years constructing. In case you’re disinclined towards trying the game out yourself, there’s a video review (not ours!) of the game below the cut. Those interested in downloading the SARCIA demo should head through this link.

Even More New Screenshots of The Journey Down

Even More New Screenshots of The Journey Down

The Journey Down is one of those games I’ll never get sick of evangelizing. Not only is the game all kinds of awesome, the developers have gone the extra mile to take it even further than before. The HD version, which is currently still in the works, is scheduled for release in the first quarter of next year for the PC and Mac (Yay!). It also looks like there’s an iOS and Android versions in development. There’s an interview with SkyGoblin’s Theodor Waern on the complexities of moving from 2D to 3D coming up soon. But for now, go drool over the new screenshots. If you haven’t played The Journey Down before, I recommend downloading the original from here. More screenshots after the cut. You can also check out their website here.

Action Adventure World: The Game will stomp your bawls

Action Adventure World: The Game will stomp your bawls

Back in July, I had a chance to chat with nerdcore rapper 8Bit Duane, and one of the things we brought up was the game he was co-creating. Action Adventure World: The Game was an opportunity for him to branch out in game development while taking his music down another avenue. It was also an opportunity to get people to say, “God, f*ck that guy,” in the most endearing way possible. AAW is a ” Nintendo hard ” platformer that incorporates elements from various games such as Mario , Sonic , Mega Man , Chip ‘n Dale , and more. The game is split across multiple episodes, with each new installment introducing new mechanics and surprises. At its core, it’s similar to Super Meat Boy in that you have an assortment of micro levels and death comes after a single hit. The first episode , released in August, was a fairly straightforward, “reach the goal quickly” affair capped off with a boss battle homage to Rocket Knight Adventures . Episode 2, which will release by Christmas, appears to introduce the ability to attack enemies directly as well as an even wilder assortment of obstacles. AAW is hard as hell. I was able to get through the main levels of the first game without issue, but the bonus levels have really been working me over. If you think you’ve got the cojones, visit the game’s page and throw down some cash. Episode 1 costs $2 while Episode 2 can be pre-ordered for $5.
