Kickstarter Projects: Shadowrun Returns

Harebrained Schemes LLC has initiated a Kickstarter project for Shadowrun Returns , a proposed revival of the classic pen-and-paper game and console RPG series. Merging high fantasy and cyberpunk, Shadowrun spawned a number of spinoff products in the ’90s, including a pair of fondly remembered RPGs for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Its creator FASA Studio folded in 2007, following the unfortunate release of a competitive first-person shooter set in the Shadowrun universe (this particular title is given proper recognition in the video above, thankfully). Having reacquired the Shadowrun license, original game designer Jordan Weisman pitches a tactical, turn-based 2D Shadowrun game for tablets and PC platforms funded through Kickstarter. Harebrained Schemes has raised $270,000 toward its goal of $400,000 as of this writing, with 24 days left in the campaign. A DRM-free downloadable copy of the finished product will be given to supporters who pledge $15 or more. Other prizes include t-shirts, an illustrated book of short stories, and physical Doc Wagon cards (!) that confer in-game emergency medical services. [via Zeboyd Games ]

Jeff Minter Reveals iOS Pro-Fruit Propaganda/Shooter Five A Day

Llamasoft’s Jeff Minter has released gameplay footage for Five A Day , an upcoming iOS shooter inspired by the multi-national 5 A Day healthy eating program. As @shmups points out, gameplay offers a mix of Konami’s arcade classic Time Pilot and the cell phone favorite Snake , with tons of fruit thrown in for good measure. Hey, it worked for Bangai-O. Boss characters can be destroyed either by shooting them or forcing them to collide with your trailing string of fruit, which is a nice touch. I’m a fan of Time Pilot, so this looks like a lot of fun — love the weirdly foreboding ambient soundtrack, too! Five A Day has been submitted to Apple and should appear in the App Store shortly.

Browser Game Pick: Super Mystical Bunny (tek)

Browser Game Pick: Super Mystical Bunny (tek)

As much as I enjoy the festivities associated with the first of April, there’s something I like a lot more: the submissions from the world’s first MolyJam. For those uncertain as to what the whole thing actually means, the MolyJam was basically inspired by the farfetched yet intriguing tweets of Peter Molydeux. Much like the tweets that spawned them, the games that have been created are, well, special, to say the very least. You can find the full list of entries here . However, for those of you unwilling to sift through the collection of games, do not fear. We’ll be picking out our favorites throughout the week. Just don’t hold us accountable for a difference in taste. Ahem. Anyway. To kick start things, I’m going to invite you to take a look at Super Mystical Bunny. The tweet that inspired the game was, ‘You control a mystical rabbit at a bus stop during winter. You must find as many creative ways as possible to make people miss their busses.’ As the description implies, you’ll spend most of your time in this text-based title pondering ways to keep various people preoccupied in order to prevent them from boarding the busses that arrive every minute or so. At first, this is pretty easy. All you need to do is search for items, utilize them in effective combinations and chortle as the bus slips away. However, once you’ve accumulated a fair number of people at the bus stand, things can get rather hard. You can play the game here.

PAX East Trailer: Charlie Murder (Ska Studios)

One of many indies to make a PAX East appearance next weekend, Ska Studios will bring XBLA-destined Charlie Murder with its four-player, simultaneous action. Not attending PAX East with 3 friends? No worries! The game currently supports drop-in, so either you or another expo attendee can play at your leisure. Four players is a step up from Ska Studios’ last title, The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile , which only featured a 2-player mode. Charlie Murder seems to have enough action going on to keep even four players busy, too. In addition to loads of gory brawls, the trailer teases high speed vehicle sequences, beast riding, music jamming sequences, tattoo parlors (character customization, perhaps?), and even more gore, for good measure. Upon inspection of the YouTube link, Ska Studios describes Charlie Murder as an “RPG brawler hybrid inspired in equal parts by coin-op beat ‘em ups and dungeon crawlers.” Charlie Murder’s official website lacks information right now, but Ska Studios has uploaded 20 high-quality photos for inspection. Unfortunately, the developer has not announced a release date.
